Why You Should Consider Becoming An Ultrasound Technician?

The level of difficulty in fulfilling a career as diagnostic medical sonographer is easier than many other allied health services professions such as the registered nurses or radiologist. Even though the educational requirement of the ultrasound sonography career is shorter than other medical careers, it is evident that the profession is competitive when it comes to benefits such as high salary and stability of employment. Here are some of the reasons why there are many students and young adults pursue the degree programs related to sonography.

As mentioned earlier, there is only a shorter time to complete the ultrasound technician programs. Completion of the degree is required to become sonographer. In a matter of 2 years, ultrasound students can work as ultrasound sonographer given that he finishes at least the associate degree programs. With this, the graduates are given the jobs that can provide them a better future.


The market for ultrasound procedures is becoming more and more in demand nowadays. One of the reasons why there is a tremendous increase in the demand for ultrasound procedures is that many patients are seeking for safer alternatives for disease diagnosis. Ultrasound procedures are safe as sound waves are used to view internal organs and soft tissues while x-ray machines operated by X-ray technician emits the hazardous radiation that is unhealthy. Because of the increasing demand for safer disease diagnosis, there is also an increasing demand for ultrasound professional. This means that there are many job opportunities for the incoming medical sonographers.

To back up the claim of more job opportunities in the future for the aspiring ultrasound technicians, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the employment growth for sonography field is expected to be in 19% from 2008 to 2016. The expected employment growth is obviously higher than other professions and as projected, the benefits of having more job opportunities will serve the technicians who are dreaming to become successful in the field of sonography.

Ultrasound salary is higher than other professions in the allied health services. The decent salary is one of the proofs why there are an increasing number of students taking sonography degrees. As of 2011, the hourly wage of sonographers ranges from $18 to $25. The yearly salary in 2011 is ranging from $30,000 to $85,000 depending on different factors such as level of experience, level of education, location of employment, certificates and many more. In general, the level of experience will be the one to dictate salaries in the different states and cities in the US. There are cities and states that pay more than the national salary for ultrasound sonographers while there are regions that compensate ultrasound techs lower than the national salary.

There is no easy way to become a professional but through determination and hard work, pursuing a career in the field of ultrasound sonography will be an easy and enjoyable journey to become successful in the future. Becoming an ultrasound technician is rewarding for as long as their determination and hard work.
