Ultrasound tech jobs are in demand in hospitals, doctor’s offices and medical clinics. Why is this happening? The simple answer is that medical field jobs will never experience recession. One of the promising fields of medicine where jobs are in high demand is the medical sonography. As a matter of fact, the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics reported that the increasing number of ultrasound technician jobs today would grow into double in 2016 projected it.
One of the job descriptions of the ultrasound tech is to generate clear images of the patient’s inside organs and veins in order for the doctor to properly diagnosis the patient’s disease. Moreover, it is expected for the technician to have outstanding communication skills because his work entails patient interaction. Here are some of the places where the ultrasound tech can apply for employment.
Hospitals
Ultrasound technicians are commonly seen in hospitals. Several departments inside the hospital need ultrasound sonographers. Ultrasound technicians who have credentials in the field of obstetrics and gynecological sonography can choose to apply in the OB ward of the hospitals. Obstetrics and gynecological sonographer is considered as one of the most jobs in the field of ultrasound sonography. One more rewarding thing about being a technician is when you see the priceless smile in the face of the pregnant women upon seeing their babies under the ultrasound machine. The ultrasound obstetrics and gynecological sonographer does not experience the pressure and toxicity that the other sonography divisions experience. The echocardiography and vascular sonography department; gastroenterology department for the abdominal sonography and the ophthalmology department for the diagnosis of different eye problems are the areas where the technician could look for work. In order to be qualified in working at hospitals the ultrasound tech must be able to pass credentialing examinations from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
Medical Clinic And Diagnostic Laboratories
Aside from the hospital job opportunities, the ultrasound tech can hunt for jobs on the various medical clinics and laboratories where doctors need the assistance of licensed technicians to help him fully diagnose diseases of patients. Unlike in hospital-based technicians, the clinic-based technicians perform general sonography and should be able to have certification in Sonography Principals and Instrumentation (SPI) from ARDMS. He performs general ultrasound procedures.
The average salary of ultrasound technicians is ranging from $65,000 to $75,000 annually. However, the figures above are not applicable to all technicians. Salaries have variations and there are factors affecting the salary ranges for technicians. The length of experience the technician gained in his profession is a factor to determine salary range. Generally, technicians who are working for more than 10 years earn more than those who have only worked for two years in their jobs. Geographical location is also an important factor because ultrasound techs working in hospitals in key cities earns more than those in the rural areas.
