Two-year associate degree is the minimum educational requirement for ultrasound technician to work in a hospital, laboratory or clinic. Although some ultrasound tech schools have a prerequisite that the applicant should have finished another medical field course, there are other schools that accept high school graduates as long as a high school diploma is acquired. Good grades in mathematics and science are required for any applicant with a high school diploma.

Upon enrollment, the student is allowed to choose the specialty that he wants to pursue. With this, he will be given his courses depending on his sub-specialty. The subjects included in the curriculum of the program in the ultrasound technician schools are Anatomy, Basic Physics, Health Care Procedures, Medical Ethics, Medical terminology, Patient Care, Physiology and Technology and Instrumentation.


Physics is an important subject because physics is much related to the ultrasound procedures. Mathematics is also in the list of the curriculum. General education subjects such as English composition, psychology and other related topics that will be important for the career of the students will be taught in school. These subjects are crucial for the student to have a vast understanding of the different activities related to his work. Communication is one important subject because there will be no understanding between the patient and the ultrasound sonographer if the technician does not know how to communicate with the patient well.

After finishing the academic part of the curriculum, the student is expected to undergo clinical training in order to learn the different techniques in managing ultrasound and imaging department. With supervision the student will experience the hands-on activities of being an ultrasound technician.

In all ultrasound tech schools, the students are given this clinical training in order to familiarize themselves with the duties and responsibilities they will handle when they are employed in the future. This is also the chance for the student to use the techniques and knowledge they learned in class. The training includes how to operate the ultrasound machine, maintain the ultrasound department with all the other related instruments and devices, record patient information and make medical histories.

Choosing a career as a medical sonographer will be easy as long as the student is capable of following the course calendar, which is given to him before the school starts. It is also essential to choose the ultrasound technician schools that will offer the best degree courses.
