The ultrasound technician who is also referred as the diagnostic medical sonographer is responsible of generating clear images of the patient’s internal organs and soft tissues in order for the licensed medical physician to have the final disease diagnosis. Today, the number of students who are interested to pursue ultrasound degree programs is increasing. Let us go over the reasons why the ultrasound technician career is worth a closer look?

The ultrasound sonography is one of the allied health services professions where the students are not required to finish bachelor degree programs. As early as two years, ultrasound sonographer students can graduate from an associate program and can already practice the duties and responsibilities of the sonographer. Unlike other medicine-related degree programs, the ultrasound sonography profession offers immediate employment with just two years for high school graduates and 12 months for medical professionals who want to have knowledge on the basic principles and techniques of medical sonography.

In the report of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the sonographer employment would have a growth of 19% from 2008 to 2016. The growth of employment indicates that there will be more job opportunities than expected in the future. Ultrasound sonographers will never experience unemployment because the employment growth is one of the highest among allied health services. Ultrasound sonography graduates will have more job opportunities to choose from.

Today, ultrasound professionals are highly in demand because there is an increasing old age and sickly population. Majority of the elders and sick people are looking for alternative medical procedures with a safer profile when it comes to radiation emitted by the machine such as x-ray. Ultrasound procedures are known to be one of the safest medical processes to diagnose a disease. With the increasing demand for ultrasound technicians, there will be more opportunities for those who are still starting out their career in the field of sonography.

One of the inviting factors that attract students is the high income. The average ultrasound technician salary is ranging from $45, 000 to $85,000, depending on the different factors affecting salary range.

The things mentioned above are some of the reasons why a career in ultrasound technology is worth a closer look. With a shorter period to accomplish ultrasound programs, one can become ultrasound technician and can benefit from a profession, which is highly demanded and offers a great pay.
