The important compositions of the ultrasound education aside from the lecture part are the laboratory and the externship training. For the externship training, the students are required to perform the real tasks and duties of an ultrasound tech. This is an important part of the overall degree program in the ultrasound sonography because this portion will be the test of whether the students will be ready to work as technicians in the future. Proper use and management as well as storage and maintenance of the diagnostic medical imaging instruments are being practiced in externship training. Usually, this is performed in different training health centers where medical professionals or licensed sonographers train the students. Patient care and proper communication and patient record keeping and updating are some of the other duties of the technician.

Ultrasound technician training can also be availed through online schools that offer accredited sonography programs.
