Completing an ultrasound technician training is the most essential and basic requirement if you are looking for a job as a diagnostic medical sonographer. This training could be achieved through accredited ultrasound tech programs offered by offline training institutes and online schools. Here are some basic information regarding ultrasound technology and where to secure sonography training.

There is a high demand of the jobs in ultrasound technology. This is the reason why complete and extensive training is needed for aspiring ultrasound technicians. According to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 18% growth would be achieved by the ultrasound technology industry from 2008 to 2018 making the industry still the number one among the employment sectors in the country.

Several ways can be done in order to complete the training required to become an ultrasound technician. Some of these ways include enlisting in training institutes such as community colleges, schools or universities. Some legitimate online training programs are also available which offers convenience and flexibility. The important thing that you should make sure before enrolling to any ultrasound tech programs is accreditation. This is important because without the accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), quality of education is not assured. With the accreditation, there is an assurance that the standards for teaching the different ultrasound principles and techniques are being followed by the school.


Since the field of ultrasound technician is a medical field, background in subjects like biology, math, physics and basic anatomy is needed. Most of the sonography schools are requiring medicine related subjects before you are enrolled in their programs for ultrasound technician. If you have taken these subjects in your high school education, you will have no problem if you want to pursue a career in medical sonography.

There are at least three ultrasound degrees if you want to pursue a career as an ultrasound tech. Certificates can be acquired by completing a one-year certificate program while an associate degree will let you be in school for two years. The most promising one among the three degrees is the bachelor degree. Four years of intensive training will be able to turn out students to become the skilled technicians to perform the jobs effectively and efficiently.

After completing the educational requirements, students are required to take clinical training before being issued the certificates or diploma of ultrasound technology. In the training, the students will experience the real world of the ultrasound sonographer and will have experience in using the ultrasound machines and other related medical devices. A professional sonographer will supervise the students in their trainings.

Completion of the ultrasound technician training is essential that is why effort in studying harder in the entire duration of the educational requirement is needed to gain all the knowledge to become a certified ultrasound tech in the future.
