Ultrasound technology and x-ray imaging are two different fields of medicine where both use medical imaging technique to diagnose diseases, which is why these two fields are commonly compared in terms of ultrasound technician salary versus x-ray technician salary. Aside from the rate of payment for both professions, there is only a little difference when it comes to the job description of both the x-ray technician and the ultrasound sonographer. Here are some of the common differences of the two fields of allied medicine.

Radiologic technicians, commonly called x-ray technicians are responsible in making x-ray images that will be utilized by the physician to diagnose a disease. In the other hand, an ultrasound technician is responsible in capturing dynamic images of the required section of the insides of the human body also to help the doctor make the proper diagnosis of the patient’s disease. The destination of the x-ray technician is at public or private hospitals, clinics, medical laboratories and other institutions where x-ray imaging is required which is just the same with the ultrasound tech.

As with job description, the x-ray technician is involved with the responsibility of making the final and actual diagnosis which will be used by the doctor to make medical advice to patients of what medications to do, if proven that the patients are ill. It is the technician’s responsibility to make a position where the patient can be properly filmed and capture the final image for the x-ray film. Furthermore, the x-ray technician makes the proper interpretation of the result of the x-ray image and explains to the patient the result of the procedure.


The responsibilities of the medical sonographer involve making the initial diagnosis of the patient’s diseases by means of capturing dynamic images for the aid of the doctor to make the proper and final diagnosis of the patient’s disease. Management of ultrasound machines and related equipment, patient care and record management are some of the tasks of the sonographers.

For the x-ray tech salary, let us review the hourly rate per popular industry where these technicians work. In the healthcare industry, the average hourly wage is $15.33 – $23.71 while for hospital based the wage is $15.68 – $23.95. For the orthopedic surgery clinics, the average hourly rate is $14.94 – $22.59, $14.89 – $22.74 for clinics and for medical offices it is $14.72 – $22.48.

For the ultrasound tech salary, here is the average hourly rate per popular industries where these technicians work. In the healthcare industry, the average hourly wage is between $22.47 and $31.43 while for hospital based it is between $22.45 and $31.55. For the obstetrics and gynecological clinics the average hourly rate is $23.55 – $32.75, $24.05 – $32.08 for diagnostic imaging and for radiology clinics it is $21.12 – $29.88.

Ultrasound technician salary is paid higher than an x-ray technician salary. However, several factors are needed to assess the salary of each profession in the medical field. It is recommended to research for the salary ranges in the desired area of work.
