Ultrasound technician professionals are currently in demand nowadays. The increasing demand for ultrasound professionals have created an increasing demand also for the more schools and training centers because of the continuously increasing number of high school graduates and other individuals who are interested to pursue such a career. Having the basic and required information for the chosen career path is for the student to utilize while he is accomplishing major requirements needed for him to become professional in this field. This article will discuss and compare about ultrasound tech education versus medical billing and coding education.

The sonographer is the medical professional who is responsible in taking or generating clear images of the patient’s internal organs and all accessory veins and tissues related with it to fully diagnose the medical condition of the patient. On the other hand, the medical biller and coder is the person responsible in properly translating patient information into alphanumeric medical code. The important information being translated by the medical biller and coder are treatment, health history and diagnosis which then will be transferred from the medical providers to the insurance in order to make the proper billing and health care providers will be able to be paid.


As per education, the ultrasound formal education and clinical training can be accomplished in as fast as 12 months for the certificate level, two years for the associate degree and four years for the bachelor degree programs. The certificate program is only for the currently employed medical professionals who are willing to gain knowledge about ultrasound techniques and principles. Associate and bachelor degree programs are for all interested individuals who want to become ultrasound technicians.

The medical billing and coding profession requires no set of education to become one. However, there are specific skills, which one should be able to learn in order to perform the job responsibilities properly. If interested to become medical biller and coder, there is an associate degree and bachelor degree for formal education to be accomplished.

Ultrasound tech salary is perceived to be higher with those who have acquired license and have finished specialty courses after the completion of the basic educational requirements. Medical billing and coding salary is higher for those who have undergone the proper training when compared to those who just acquired their skills from experience. Moreover, preference is given to the people who have acquired proper education and training rather than those who just learned the skill from experience.

Whatever professional career one chooses to pursue needs proper education and training that is why it is required to finish at least the most basic among all the ultrasound technician programs or the medical billing and coding programs.
