Top Five Ultrasound Technician Schools

In order to become successful in ultrasound technician profession, the first step is to choose among the ultrasound tech schools of which will best provide the quality education and expertise you need in the profession. Some criteria are vital in choosing for the right school. One critical factor is the accreditation. Several ultrasound technician schools were given certifications from the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science

This school is located in Los Angeles, California. Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science provides a Bachelor’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and is duly certified by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs to offer such degrees.

Some of the areas covered in the curriculum are anatomy, abdominal sonography, and ultrasound laboratory experience. It is more affordable to enroll in this school with just $468.00 per credit. However, this school is not intended for the fresh graduates from high school since one of the requirements for enrollment is an associate degree course in ultrasound technology.

Seattle University

Located in Seattle Washington, Seattle University has a college named College of Science and Engineering’s Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound, which provides education and training in ultrasound sonography. The bachelor degree program and the school itself are both accredited by CAAHEP.


The bachelor’s degree program has about 181 credits and students are strictly required to have at least 2.5 GPA average to be permitted to graduate as ultrasound technician. Just like any other curriculum from other schools, this university is concerned in both classroom education and hands-on experience of the students to learn more techniques as ultrasound sonographers.

Unlike the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, this university is recommended for high school graduates as long as they submit two recommendation letters and personal essay and also filling up the undergraduate admissions examination and a supplemental diagnostic ultrasound application. However, this school is not intended for those who are financially incapable to afford tuition fee, which is fairly high and costly and may range from $45,493 annually for students residing inside the campus and $38,284 for those are residing outside campus.

Newman University

Located in Wichita Kansas, Newman University offers four-year degree course in sonography programs and will award Bachelor of Science degree diploma upon graduation to successful students.

Some of the included programs in the curriculum are ultrasound theory, instrumentation, anatomy, scanning techniques and technologies, and advanced ultrasound methods. And just like other universities, ample experience on hands-on practical clinical ultrasound is also provided.

This school doesn’t accept newbies and only require applicants having been completed an RN nursing program or an Associate’s degree in a related area of the healthcare or allied health industry.

Although the school only accepts eligible professionals from the medicine field, the tuition fee is rather lower than other ultrasound tech schools having the same standards. For U.S. resident applicants, the tuition is $9,936 per year while for non-US residents; they charge $19,872 per year.

Cypress College

Cypress College is located in Cypress, California where it is considered as a four-year academic college. All the three programs in ultrasound technology are offered in this school such as the one-year or less training program, associate degree for two years and the four-year program for bachelor degree. This school is accredited both by CAAHEP and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Ferris State University

This university is considered as a public university. Just like Cypress College, it is accredited both by CAAHEP and ARRT. Among the main specialties in the programs offered are obstetric and gynecological ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound. The curriculum has included three clinical internships that are similar to the other sonography schools.

When choosing the best ultrasound technician schools, make sure the schools offer accredited programs that is accredited by CAAHEP and research well with the standard of education and training the school offers and also the tuition fee range.
