The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics is the government body responsible in reporting the latest trend of ultrasound technician salary. It was reported that the average sonograher wage in 2011 is $18 to $25 per hour. Ultrasound technicians are among the professionals who are highly compensated in the medical industry. Due to the high salary, more people take sonography education and participate in ultrasound training programs in order to become ultrasound technologists in the future.

However, not all ultrasound technicians get high salaries in their jobs because ultrasound salary depends on factors such as years of experience, location of employment whether by city or by state and certifications. Let us go over how much ultrasound technicians could earn with the latest update of their income.

The updated report of PayScale claims that longer (in years) an ultrasound tech rendered service in the sonography industry, the higher is his compensation. As of May 2011, technicians who have less than a year experience are compensated with income starting from $23,583 to $58,354. One to four years of working means that the salary range can start from $30,151 to $66,934. Technicians who have worked from five to nine years can earn income starting from $42,564 to $79,644 annually. The guaranteed salary of an ultrasound technologist with work experience of ten to nineteen years starts from $51,316 to $86,454. Sonographers who have worked for twenty years or more will be highly compensated and will get the salary range from $48,479 and could reach $92,738 per annum. These technicians are among the highest pay in the ultrasound field.

Another factor that affects ultrasound salary is the location of employment. Basically, ultrasound technologists who are employed in big cities earn higher wages than those who are working in sub-urban areas. As of May 2011 reported by PayScale, New York City is one of the places where ultrasound technicians are properly compensated. Sonographers in New York City receive salaries starting from $20,067 to $80,373 while in Tampa City (Florida), technicians are paid from $35,235 to $65,557. In Florida City, the annual income of a medical sonographer is ranging from $30,000 to $80,576 while those from Atlanta City receive an annual income ranging from $38,884 to $45,781. Some of the cities, which compensate ultrasound technicians with a lower salary range when compared to big cities, are Philadelphia and Cincinnati having yearly income ranging from $37,500 to $50,000 and $38,927 to $48,980 respectively. Technicians who are looking for employment should be careful before accepting any job offer from several cities. Having a background on the different salary ranges is a big help.

Just like city of employment, state where the sonographer is employed matters on how high or low his salary will be. Florida, New York, California, Texas, and Pennsylvania are among the states, which offer a high compensation for qualified sonographers. Florida based ultrasound technicians are expected to earn from $29,748 to $66,328 while New Yorkers are able to receive salaries starting from $20,608 to $82,372. California, Texas and Pennsylvania offer salaries for ultrasound technicians starting from $32,215 to $82,176; $29,799 to $70,469 and $30,410 to $72,002 respectively. Pursuing a career in ultrasound technology from these states will ensure a brighter future ahead of the student’s future life.

Although the ultrasound technician salary is influenced by many factors, it is guaranteed that when you decide to study in one of good ultrasound tech schools to follow a career leading to become a qualified medical diagnostic sonographer in the future, you will be offered higher salary than other professionals in the medical field.
