Ultrasound sonography is in demand today and one of the highly demanded ultrasound technician professionals is the ophthalmic ultrasound tech. Before one becomes qualified to perform the duties and responsibilities of the diagnostic medical sonographers, he should meet educational requirements such as ultrasound degree program. While studying in any of the sonography schools, the ultrasound student can specialized in different sub specialties such as the ophthalmologic sonography. Here is an overview of the ophthalmic tech career.

The main responsibility of ultrasound sonographers in the sub-field of ophthalmologic sonography is to make clear images of the different parts of the eyes in order for the licensed ophthalmologist to diagnose the patient’s disease in the eyes. As an ophthalmic specialist utilizes high frequency sound waves in order to view and create images of the eyes and the related parts of the eyes. With the use of the ultrasound machine for the eyes, cross-section B-scan images and Time-Amplitude A-scan images of the globe and orbit are made.


After completion of the education from any of the ophthalmic ultrasound college, the graduates can apply in the different clinics where ophthalmology is found. With the increasing demand of ultrasound professionals today, the job outlook of the ophthalmic ultrasound tech is good. In fact the sonographer salary can be in the range of $35,000 to $80,000 per year depending on many factors.

The number of students pursuing a career as diagnostic medical sonographer nowadays is increasing that is why there are also an increasing number of ultrasound schools all over the US. The student must be able to take caution in choosing the right schools because not all schools are accredited by the CAAHEP to offer accredited programs for him or her to become ophthalmic ultrasound tech.
