Ultrasound technician training is known to be very demanding. Ultrasound or sonography is a lucrative and interesting profession in the medical field. It is not difficult to gain entry into this field. It revolves around assisting doctors as well as other health professionals by administering procedures of ultrasound imaging. Sonographers adjust as well as maintain ultrasound equipment themselves. They handle technical aspects of the entire diagnostic process. Does all this in any way imply that ultrasound tech training can be completed in a week? No, it doesn’t!

There are various educational alternatives for those who want to become ultrasound technicians. These are in the range of short, less detailed courses to very extensive degree programs. Besides this, there are many areas of focus and concentration with regard to ultrasound. Here are some different kinds of training.

The shortest programs available are the certificate courses. They focus on the basics of sonography. A certificate is awarded on completion of the course. Vocational or career schools usually offer these courses. The duration is a year or 1 and half years. If you want to start working and plan to return to school later, these programs are ideal. Employers hire people who have completed certificate courses, though not for jobs at the higher level and positions that involve better pay. However, one has the option to get advanced training later. The certificate at least allows a person to begin working and get real world practical experience.

The most common programs that people opt for are the associate degree courses. Most people are able to manage the 2-year training program with ease. It allows them to be part of the qualified workforce in a short span of time. Associate degree study courses give a detailed background in practical and theoretical application of the techniques of ultrasound in the curriculum. A number of educational institutions offer these programs like technical schools, junior colleges, community colleges, vocational schools and average four-year universities and academic colleges. Teaching hospitals might also offer them.

Bachelor’s degree courses give in-depth ultrasound training. They could also include the other kinds of training in medical imaging like radiologic imaging and echocardiography. If you are mainly interested in ultrasound and are not keen on getting into the other kinds of imaging, the associate degree would be right for you. In case you feel the need to specialize, opting for the bachelor degree would be the ideal choice. You would have to spend time educating yourself but it would result in greater opportunity and job diversity after graduation.

Many hospitals provide ultrasound technology training. They are the places that would give you the real feel of what sonography is like in reality in a medical situation. The programs that are offered by such hospitals include theory as well as comprehensive practical experience. Traditional ultrasound technician schools also have to offer hands on training programs.
