On the average, the ultrasound technician salary can range from $55 000- $80 000 annually depending on several factors. The mean annual income of sonographers as reported by the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) is $63,640 as of May 2009. Another rewarding benefit of the sonographers is the ability to have a stable job. In fact, US BLS reported that there will be an 18% growth in the employment rate of ultrasound technology field from 2008-2016; making the sonography jobs one of the highest growing professions in medical industry. The average yearly income of diagnostic sonographers in California is $74,030 making it $35.59 per hour. The data from US BLS claims that in California sonographers earn above the national average that is $63,640. The salary for sonographers in California is higher by $10,390 a year from the national average making it a state that abundantly compensates ultrasound technicians.

The state of Colorado is another place that offers high sonographer salaries. According to the information provided by the US BLS, ultrasound technicians are expected to receive an average salary range of $64,290 to $77,380 annually. This figure indicates that the hourly rate can range from $27.23 to $37.20. Colorado Springs compensates sonographers with an average salary of $71,590 each year while in Boulder the average salary is $83,790. Aurora and Denver are similar in the average pay rate that is $79,790 annually.

The state of Oregon is a good place to start a career in medical sonography. The average ultrasound salary in Oregon in the year of 2011 is $78,320 annually. As a matter of fact, the salary range can go higher since the top 25% of diagnostic medical sonographers in Oregon earn an average of $87,110 yearly while the top 10% of ultrasound technologists can receive an incredible amount of $99,620 every year. The hourly rate is between $37.65 and $47.89. Furthermore, the US BLS reported that the median annual ultrasound pay in Portland is $81,520, Bend is $77,590 while in Salem is $78,590.

On the contrary to the highest paying states, one of the lowest paying states when it comes to ultrasound technician salary is Alabama. US BLS reported that the annual salary in Alabama is around $50,320 meaning that most of the technicians in this state are earning an hourly wage of $24.19. Across Alabama, the average salary of the technicians in Montgomery is $49,000, in Huntsville is $48,730, while in Birmingham it is $53,140.

The ultrasound technician salary is an inviting factor for students to decide a career towards ultrasound sonography. Just put in mind that the figures being reported by the US BLS are only in the average and does not mean that all technicians are earning the same salary. There are still many factors accompanying salaries such as years of experience and trainings and certifications.
